Sukanta Majumdar is an Indian politician. Born in December, 1979, Sukanta is a Lok Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) from the Balurghat constituency in West Bengal.
His father, Sushanta Kumar Majumdar, was a government employee and his mother Nibedita Majumdar was a primary school teacher.
Sukanta Majumdar was groomed as a Sangh worker under the guidance of his mentor Debi Das Chaudhuri (former president of the Bharatiya Jan Sangh).
Sukanta Majumdar's education and career
He holds an M.Sc, B.Ed and a PhD degree in Botany from the University of North Bengal. He is also a professor of Botany at the University of Gour Banga in the Malda district of West Bengal.
According to his profile on the Lok Sabha website, Majumdar has published over 15 scientific papers in national and international journals.
He is a member of the Standing Committee on Information Technology and Committee on Petitions since 2019.
Sukanta Majumdar's political rise
Sukanta Majumdar, who has a longstanding association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), became the first-time parliamentarian from the Balurghat after defeating Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Arpita Ghosh with a margin of 33,293 votes.
He was elected to the Lok Sabha in the 2018 Indian general election as a member of the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP).
Sukanta Majumdar was named as the President of West Bengal BJP on September 20, 2021, succeeding Dilip Ghosh. For the first time, the state leadership has a president from north Bengal.
He has been entrusted with one of the most challenging responsibilities because of his efforts to revive the party's position in North Bengal.
