Early life and education
Gill was born on September 8, 1999, in Punjab's Fazilka district. Gill's father, Lakhwinder Singh, was a farmer who wanted to be a professional cricketer. Gill, along with his family, moved to Mohali to learn cricket professionally. Initially, Gill took coaching for cricket from his school, and he was later admitted to the Punjab Cricket Association's academy.
Career
Gill made his List A debut for Punjab in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in February 2017 and his Ranji Trophy in November of that year. Gill rose to fame in the 2018 ICC U19 World Cup, where he made 418 runs at an average of 104.50.
The 23-year-old was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 1.8 crore in 2018 and made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut in April of that year against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Eden Garden, Kolkata. Ahead of the IPL 2019, the batsman was named one of the eight players to watch by the International Cricket Council (ICC). He won the Emerging Player of the tournament award in the IPL 2019.
Gill made his ODI debut in a match against New Zealand at Seddon Park in January 2019. He made his test debut against Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground in December 2020.
He made his Twenty20 International debut in a match against Sri Lanka at Wankhede Stadium, in Mumbai on January 3, 2023.
In ODIs matches this year, Gill has made 567 runs in six innings at an average of 113.40. In a match against New Zealand on January 24, the batsman crossed He crossed the 2,000-run mark in international cricket. In international cricket, Gill has made five centuries, and nine fifties with the best individual score of 208.
In the ICC ODI Rankings 2023 released on January 25, Gill was named the sixth-best batsman, a ranking that is the best of his career yet.
