WHO IS SATYENDAR JAIN

Satyendar Jain is a member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and a Cabinet minister in the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government. He was elected to the Delhi Assembly from the Shakur Basti constituency in February 2015. The portfolios he holds are health, industries, home, public works department, power, urban development and transport.

He is currently in his second term as Delhi’s health minister, having previously served in that role from 28 December 2013 to 14 February 2014 in the previous AAP government.

An architect by profession, Satyendar Jain worked at the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) but quit his job to set up an architectural consultancy firm. He joined active politics after participating in the Anna Hazare-led anti-corruption movement of 2011. He has also been an active functionary of several social welfare organisations.

Jain’s tenure as a Delhi minister has not been without controversies. Former AAP member Kapil Mishra had accused Jain of offering CM Arvind Kejriwal a bribe of Rs 2 crore. Kejriwal, along with Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, had vociferously refuted these allegations. Mishra had also alleged Jain's involvement in a Rs 400-crore water tanker scam.

Jain was also accused of nepotism and procedural misconduct by the Shunglu committee and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probed the recruitment of his daughter for supporting AAP's healthcare initiative. CBI gave him a clean chit after finding no instance of misconduct.
