Krishna Tirath
A Congress leader from Delhi, Krishna Tirath served as the Union women and child development minister in the Manmohan Singh-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. She represented the North West Delhi constituency in the 15th Lok Sabha.
Tirath had quit the Congress in 2015 and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She had contested the Delhi Assembly election in 2015 from the Patel Nagar constituency on a BJP ticket and lost to AAP’s Hazari Lal Chauhan by a margin of 34,638 votes.
In 2019, she rejoined the Indian National Congress.
Tirath began her political career in early 1980s and was a member of the Delhi Legislative Assembly from 1984 to 2004. In 1998, she was given charge of the Women and Child Development Ministry in the Sheila Dixit-led Delhi government. However, she had to resign following a controversy. After her resignation, she was made the deputy speaker of the Delhi Assembly in 2003.
In the 2004 and 2009 Lok Sabha elections, Tirath represented the North West Delhi seat in the Lower House of Parliament.
