WHO IS KARAN SINGH TANWAR


Karan Singh Tanwar is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He represented the Delhi Cantonment constituency in the Delhi Legislative Assembly thrice — 1993-98, 2003-08, and 2008-13. In the next two Delhi Assembly polls he lost to the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP’s) Surender Singh — by just 355 votes in 2013, and by 11,198 votes in 2015.
 
Tanwar, who completed his graduation in Mathematics from Delhi University’s (DU’s) Motilal Nehru College. A businessman by profession, the 68-year-old politician is also the vice-chairman of New Delhi Municipal Council.
 
His political career began after being elected the president of the Delhi University Student Union in 1970. He was jailed for 19 months during the Emergency period (1975-1977). He was also elected a member of the Delhi Cantonment Board in 1979.
 
In the 2020 Delhi Assembly election, the BJP decided not to field Tanwar, its usual candidate from Delhi Cantt, and instead gave the ticket to Manish Singh.
