WHO IS HAROON YUSUF


Haroon Yusuf is an Indian politician affiliated with the Indian National Congress (INC), and the working president of the Delhi Congress.
 
Born on March 6, 1958, Yusuf did his MCom from Zakir Husain College of the Delhi University (DU). He has active in student politics from 1979 to 1983. After completing his college education, Yusuf joined active politics and was elected the secretary of the Delhi Pradesh Youth Congress in 1988. He was given charge as the chairman of the Anti-Narcotic Cell and All India Youth Congress Wing. In 1989, Yusuf was appointed the joint secretary of the All India Youth Congress Wing.
 
He became the first-elected chairman of the Delhi Wakf Board in 1999 and held that post till 2004. He also served as the chairman of Estimates Committee and Public Accounts Committee in the Delhi Legislative Assembly, and chairman of the G B Pant Hospital Advisory Committee.
 
First elected to the Delhi Assembly from the Ballimaran constituency in 1993, Yusuf went on to represent the seat for 22 years — winning the elections in 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013. His winning streak was broken in the 2015 Delhi elections, when the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP’s) Imran Hussain defeated him by a whopping 43,913 votes. Yusuf managed to poll only 13.80 per cent of the votes cast in the constituency, against Hussain’s 59.71 per cent, and finished third. The second was the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) Shyam Lal Morwal, whose vote share was 24.30 per cent.
 
Previously, Haroon Yusuf had served as the Minister of Food & Civil Supplies Department and Industries Department in the Sheila Dikshit-led Delhi government.
 
Haroon Yusuf also held the following positions (1993-2013)
 
* First term as MLA (1993-1998): A member of the Committee on Library in the Delhi Assembly (1994-1996), and of the Committee on Question & Reference (1996-1999).
 
* Second term (1998-2003): Chairman of Public Accounts Committee (1999-2002), Committee on Assembly Rules (1999-2002), and Committee on Library (1999-2002)
 
* Third term (2003-2008) Cabinet minister for Power and Transport
