She was born in Howrah district of West Bengal on August 9, 1993 to father Pijush Dhar and mother Dipka Thakur Chakraborty. She is also the grand-daughter of 3-time Member of Legislative Assembly Padma Nidhi Dhar. Her cousin, Shovan Ganguly, is a Bengali play-back singer.
Dipsita Dhar did her graduation in Geography from Asutosh College in Kolkata. After graduation, Dhar did her Post Graduation and MPhil in Geography from Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru College (JNU). Currently, she is pursuing PhD in population studies from JNU.
Student politics
Kishore Bahini, a children's group in West Bengal, was from where Dhar started her political journey. In Asutosh College, she joined the SFI and later became the acting President of SFI College Unit. Later, she also became the district committee member of Kolkata. In 2013, after she joined JNU, Dhar became the Councillor for School of Social Sciences. This was the first victory for SFI in Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’Union (JNUSU), after its disruption in 2012. In 2015, Dhar contested unsuccessfully for the post of Vice President of JNUSU. Later she became the unit president and secretary of SFI in JNU. She was also elected as the Vice President of SFI in the Delhi State Committee in 2015. In 2018, she became the All India Joint Secretary of SFI.
Dhar has been actively involved in numerous student-led protests. She has been a vocal figure on issues related to gender, sexual harassment and Indian higher education. She was also actively involved in the Justice for Rohit Vemula movement and the anti-CAA protests. Dhar also played an important role in Nabanna agitation in West Bengal that demanded jobs and education for youth.
