Anup Gupta, a politician associated with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has been elected as mayor of Chandigarh in the recently held Chandigarh mayoral elections 2023. Anup has registered his victory by defeating Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Jasbir Singh. Out of the 29 votes polled, Anup gained 15 votes to win over Jasbir Singh, who was able to bag 14 votes. Gupta will now succeed Sarabjit Kaur. Congress, which has six members, and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), which has a single member, decided to abstain from voting. Both, the BJP and AAP are represented in the municipal corporation house by 14 council members each.

Career Before being elected as Chandigarh's mayor, Anup Gupta was previously the Deputy Mayor. He was elected from Ward 11 in 2021, which covers Sectors 18, 19, and 21 of the union territory. Anup is also considered a close aide of all top BJP leaders from Chandigarh including Sanjay Tandon, Arun Sood and MP Kirron Kher. Previously, Gupta also held the post of BJP Secretary. BJP's Kirron Kher, who is also Chandigarh's Member of Parliament, has a vote being an ex-officio member of the municipal corporation House, and voted for these polls too.
Chandigarh Mayor Elections 2023 The Chandigarh Mayor elections, 2023 were held on January 17 at the Assembly Hall of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, where the polling began at 11 am. A mayor in Chandigarh serves the post for a period of one year. To be elected as a mayor in Chandigarh, a candidate needs to get at least 19 votes. The elections for the position of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor were also held later in the day.
