Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) was launched by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in 2016 to help pregnant women get comprehensive and quality Antenatal Care (ANC) free of cost.
The scheme aims to provide routine ANC services by Obstetrician-Gynaecologists, Radiologists and Physicians to pregnant women, especially for those in 2nd and 3rd trimesters in government health centres in urban and rural areas. What does the scheme provide?
The scheme provides medicines such as IFA and calcium supplements to all pregnant women at the PMSMA centre.
The scheme identifies high-risk pregnancies based on obstetric/medical history and clinical conditions and provides required medical care, and mother and child protection cards.
Provides diagnostic services including screening for conditions like Anaemia, Gestational Diabetes, and Hypertension.
Provides counselling services and documentation to pregnant women.
Under PMSMA, state governments provide nutritional supplements to women at health centres.
Birth planning, complication readiness and identification of risk factors/comorbid conditions, are also part of the scheme.
Benefits of the scheme
PMSMA provides access to ANC services on the 9th of every month to pregnant women.
Helps in the timely detection of pregnancy-related risks.
Provides birth preparedness counselling, promotes institutional delivery and Postpartum Family Planning ( PPFP ).
Engagement Doctors working under private hospitals are encouraged to volunteer for the scheme by registering in the PMSMA Portal or using the ‘Volunteer Registration’ option on the PMSMA mobile app. Pregnant women can also find the nearest PMSA centres using the PMSMA app. ‘I Pledge For 9’Achievers Awards PMSMA's ‘I Pledge For 9’Achievers Awards‘ was initiated to recognize the contribution of private sector doctors who volunteered for the PMSMA scheme.
