In the past few years, India has seen a massive e-governance drive from both central and state governments. As part of the drive, e-challan is issued nowadays for traffic violations, which can be paid online. The government has digitised the entire process, which helps in saving time and paperwork. Moreover, people don’t have to stand in a queue.
Centre and state governments have their own websites for filing online e-challan. The Centre's portal is handled by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Apart from paying the fine, you can also check the status of your e-challan and file a complaint if there is any discrepancy.
How is the e-challan generated?
E-challan is issued when you commit any traffic-related rules, knowingly or unknowingly. The e-challan is generated through the Electronic Challan System. The system encrypts all the data of violations and transfers it to a centralized server at the Traffic Control Room. It then generates the e-challan along with photo/video evidence, which is captured through the CCTV cameras installed on the roads. The system then sends the e-challan to the violators through an SMS.
